Tia Mowry’s Family Meal Tradition: Mom-Inspired Veggie Side Dish

Tia Mowry talked with us about her new cooking show Not Like Mama, her mindful morning routine and her favorite soup dish from Hungary.

Tia Mowry rose to fame through her roles alongside her sister Tamera in the 90s sitcom “Sister, Sister” and Disney’s “Twitches.” Beyond her acting career, she has delved into her passion for food. Currently, she co-hosts the competition cooking show “Not Like Mama,” where home chefs challenge their mothers to see who can prepare mom’s signature dish better. This show, reminiscent of her previous cooking show “Tia Mowry at Home,” emphasizes the importance of food in family gatherings, especially during the holiday season.

Fortunately, we had the opportunity to interview Mowry about her latest show. Additionally, we explored her morning routine on set, her mother’s signature dish, and her fondness for Hungarian soup.

EatingWell: During the filming of “Not Like Mama,” how did you typically start your mornings?

Mowry: My mornings begin with a conscious effort to avoid checking my phone immediately. Instead, I focus on meditation and introspection, even while in the hair and makeup chair. I dedicate time to journaling, clearing my mind, and beginning with a positive affirmation. Today, my affirmation was “I am confident.” Reading for wisdom follows, before I proceed to the cheerful atmosphere of hair and makeup. Breakfast consists of coffee or matcha, eggs, and a side salad—my morning staple. Amidst this routine, I cherish moments with my children, showering them with love and setting intentions for the day, embracing my role as a mother. This daily rhythm brings a sense of calm and consistency.

EatingWell: The premise of “Not Like Mama” involves a cooking showdown between a mother and child preparing the mother’s signature dish. Which of your mother’s dishes has left the most lasting impression on you?

Mowry: Collard greens hold a special place in my heart. It was one of the first dishes I mastered, considering its significance in our culture and family traditions. While I have added my own touch to the recipe, such as starting with spices and bacon fat, my mother’s traditional method involved boiling the greens with spices. If we were to compete—which I would never dare to do—I would undoubtedly feel intimidated. I applaud all the family members who participated in the show!

EatingWell: Food appears to symbolize unity for you, whether in “Tia Mowry at Home” or “Not Like Mama,” creating a relaxed, educational home environment. Could you elaborate on the inspiration behind fostering such a setting in food television?

Mowry: My deep-rooted value for family and love has always been intertwined with food. Our family bond was strengthened over meals, where we shared our thoughts, feelings, and daily experiences. Cooking at home was a priority for my parents, as it served as the focal point for family interactions. This shared mealtime allowed us to connect, communicate, and uphold our traditions. I aimed to encapsulate these values in my show, fostering togetherness, tradition, and appreciation for one another. By showcasing diverse families and their signature dishes, we celebrated cultural diversity and culinary heritage.

EatingWell: What’s your ultimate soup choice?

Mowry: Goulash holds a special place in my heart. During my visit to Budapest, I savored farm-to-table dishes, including the flavorful and comforting Goulash. The experience was unparalleled, evoking a sense of warmth and familiarity that I wanted to recreate.

EatingWell: How do you define “eating well”?

Mowry: To me, eating well signifies joy and pleasure. It’s about savoring and relishing the experience of eating. Nourishing my body, mind, and soul through mindful and intentional food choices is crucial. Whether indulging in Goulash or enjoying a simple breakfast of eggs and salad, each meal offers a unique experience and contributes to my overall well-being.
